What Is Dune Bashing?
Dune bashing is the art of driving a heavy 4×4 vehicle — typically a Toyota Land Cruiser — at high speed over, through and down sand dunes. It sounds simple. It isn’t. The driver must read the sand constantly: judging when to accelerate to climb, when to brake before a crest, how to angle the vehicle on a steep traverse, and how to descend a 60-degree face without burying the front axle.
When an experienced driver does all this correctly — at full speed, with passengers screaming across every crest — it’s one of the most viscerally exciting things you can do on a holiday. When done incorrectly (as happens with less experienced operators), it’s at best mediocre and at worst genuinely dangerous.
Red Dunes Dubai operates dune bashing in the Al Faaqr red dune area on the Al Ain Road — the tall, iconic red dunes featured in professional desert photography, not the flatter sand some operators use closer to the city. Our drivers are DTCM-licensed, trained specifically in desert off-road techniques, and hold full insurance. Seatbelts are mandatory for every passenger throughout.
Dune bashing is included in all our evening, morning, overnight and private desert safaris. You can also combine it with quad biking or a dune buggy self-drive.
How Dune Bashing Actually Works

Tyre Deflation
Before entering the dunes, tyre pressure is reduced from road level (~35 PSI) to desert level (~15 PSI). This increases the tyre footprint dramatically, preventing the vehicle sinking and improving traction across loose sand.

4-Wheel Drive Engagement
4H (4-wheel drive high) is engaged for climbing and traversing. 4L (low range) is used for steep descents, giving the driver maximum engine braking control.

Reading the Sand
The driver reads dune faces constantly — soft slip-face sand vs firm wind-packed sand behave completely differently under load. The best lines are learned through experience and constantly shift.

Cresting & Descending
Cresting a dune at speed (then seeing nothing but sky before the descent) is the signature dune bashing moment. The driver positions the vehicle dead-straight on descent to avoid a roll.

Tyre Re-inflation
On exit from the dunes, tyres are re-inflated to road pressure. Never done mid-session. Always completed before returning to tarmac.

Seatbelts Mandatory
Seatbelts are compulsory throughout the dune bashing session — no exceptions. This is a genuine safety requirement, not a suggestion. Guests who unbuckle are asked to rebuckle before continuing.
Intensity on Request
First-timer with a weak stomach? Ask your driver for a gentler session. Experienced guest who wants maximum thrill? Tell the driver. Our drivers genuinely calibrate to the group’s preference.
Motion Sickness Advice
Take anti-motion-sickness medication (Dramamine / Kwells) 1 hour before pickup if you’re prone. Sit in the middle row rather than the boot. Look at the horizon, not the dashboard.

Is dune bashing safe in Dubai?
Yes — when done with a licensed operator using properly maintained vehicles. Red Dunes Dubai uses DTCM-registered drivers with full off-road licensing and comprehensive insurance. All vehicles are maintained to road and desert standards. Seatbelts are mandatory throughout. The key risk factors in dune bashing accidents are unlicensed drivers, poorly maintained vehicles, and drivers without proper desert training — none of which apply to Red Dunes.
Is dune bashing suitable for children?
Yes — children from age 3 are welcome on our desert safaris which include dune bashing. Older children (8+) typically love it. For very young children (3–5), you can ask your driver for a gentler session. Infants under 3 should not do dune bashing — they can join at camp for the other activities. All children must wear seatbelts.
How long does dune bashing last?
The dune bashing session itself lasts approximately 20–45 minutes depending on the safari type. Morning safaris include a shorter session (around 20 minutes); evening safaris include a longer session of around 45 minutes with stops for the sunset photo opportunity. The overall safari experience (including hotel pickup, transfers, camp activities and drop-off) runs 2–6 hours depending on which package you choose.
What is the best time of year for dune bashing in Dubai?
October to April is the best time — temperatures are comfortable (20–35°C) and the experience is manageable for the full duration. May to September the desert heat exceeds 45°C in the afternoon, making evening safaris in peak summer less comfortable. Morning safaris remain feasible year-round as they take place before the heat peaks. That said, Red Dunes operates 365 days a year and all vehicles are air-conditioned — summer visitors still enjoy dune bashing, just with shorter sessions.
Can I request a gentler or more intense dune bashing session?
Yes — simply tell your driver before the session starts. Travelling with elderly guests, pregnant friends, or people with back conditions? Ask for a gentle drive. Want maximum adrenaline? Tell your driver and they’ll find the steepest faces on the route. Our drivers genuinely calibrate to the group — this is a consistent highlight of guest reviews.
